Imaging tests for bowel cancer

Imaging tests using X-rays, magnetic fields or ultrasound waves may be arranged to help diagnose bowel cancer.

Imaging tests may follow earlier tests, such as bowel cancer screening, digital rectal examination, flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.

Imaging tests help doctors visualise organs and help to determine how far the cancer has spread or how well it is responding to treatment.

Imaging tests for bowel cancer include:

CT scan or MRI

CT scan (computerised tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) give detailed images of the bowel and other organs

Ultrasound

Ultrasound scans may be used look at organs, such as the liver, to check for cancer spreading.

X-rays

Chest X-rays help assess the heart and lungs.
