At what age does your baby's personality type start to become more obvious?

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

At about 10 months old your baby's social skills are blossoming and she is developing a mind of her own. Your baby can repeat sounds, gesture to get your attention and let you know when she isn't happy about something. She may be scared, feisty or shy, but how she reacts to getting into her car seat or having her nappy changed, will give you a good idea of how her personality is developing.

What percentage of children tend to have easy or flexible personalities?

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

Research suggests children fall generally into three temperament types:

  • 40% are easy or flexible (happy, adaptable, calm)
  • 15% are slow to warm or cautious (less active, fussy)
  • 10% are active or feisty (irregular habits, easily upset, intense)

Although a child's basic temperament doesn't usually change over time, the intensity of certain traits can be affected by parenting styles and family values.

A high energy level is a trait that may lead your baby to become impatient or irritated when he is frustrated, or bored, or if things are just not happening fast enough. The key is to find ways to satisfy his need for activity. A low-to-medium energy level baby may be happy to sit quietly in a playpen or in front of the television. That may be lower maintenance than a high-energy child, but don’t just leave him there, as all babies benefit from activity and positive stimulation. The good news is high energy children often do well in sport and eventually in high-energy careers.

Does your baby embrace or withdraw from new things? If your baby reacts to new people, toys, sights and sounds with a big, beaming smile, she clearly has a high tolerance for strangers or new situations. That’s great news, but there’s also nothing wrong if baby is naturally hesitant, afraid or shy when faced with something new. Slow-to-warm up infants tend to think before they act. This can be a passing phase, or a sign that she is naturally more shy and needs reassurance and patience.

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

A child who has low adaptability may resist changes in his routine and dislike transitions from one activity to another. He may take a long time to adapt to new situations and seem uncomfortable. This type of child is usually less influenced by peer pressure. At the other end of the scale is the highly adaptable child who is perfectly comfortable with change, but may also rush headlong into risky situations.

If your baby lacks concentration, seems uninterested in an activity, or is constantly sidetracked when feeding, she may have a high level of distractability. This means it’s easy for external stimuli to get baby off track. This can be a positive trait when you are trying to divert a child from negative behaviour, but less positive when it persists and prevents a child from completing their homework.

Some babies have highly regular bodily functions, such as eating, sleeping or toilet habits. These children seem to prefer structure and respond positively to set routines. Other babies are completely unpredictable in their habits, making it difficult to set a routine around their nappy changes, naps or feeding patterns. If your child has low regularity, you may have to work on being less controlling and loosen up about routines.

If your baby reacts to losing his favourite toy with a temper tantrum and refuses to be consoled he may:

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

If your baby reacts strongly and loudly to the world around her, she may have a high level of intensity. These children may be more prone to tantrums, but may also respond with wild delight when you channel that intensity into positive energy. This type of child may do well in the dramatic arts. If your child is naturally lower in intensity and more laid back, she could be overlooked in a busy family. She still needs important life lessons so don't sit back and assume she will work it all out by herself.

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

Some babies are naturally more sensitive to bright lights, noise or textures. There's nothing anti-social about being highly sensitive and these children are often creative and artistic. As a parent, be patient and dial down the lights, volume and even pay particular attention to the type of fabric you dress your sensitive baby in. Other babies have low sensitivity and seem to enjoy sensory overload.

  • Your Answer:

Some babies have a naturally high level of perseverance and will ponder a puzzle for a long time and make several attempts to solve it. This type of child is sometimes labelled as stubborn, but is often very successful at achieving his goals. Infants with low perseverance may have the attention span of a gnat and resort to chewing pieces of the puzzle. Don’t worry, it’s not a sign he's lacking intelligence. Persevere with the puzzles, as they are great tools for lengthening baby's attention span.

Like adults, babies aren’t all little rays of sunshine when it comes to mood. Some have naturally high mood levels and are perfect pictures of joy. Others have naturally lower mood levels and are happy or sad or serious, depending on what makes them laugh or cry. These types of children tend to be analytical and evaluate situations carefully. Take time to learn what makes your baby happy. She is unique and as long as she’s not stressed, tired or over-scheduled, just go with the flow.
