Overview & facts

Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism, the way our body uses digested food for growth and energy. There are 3 main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that involves problems with the hormone insulin and blood sugar levels. There is no cure for diabetes. People with diabetes need to manage their condition to stay healthy.

There are three major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes.

The endocrine system plays a vital role in whether or not you develop diabetes.

Blood sugar

See medical guidelines for blood sugar levels with diabetes.

Blood sugar control is at the centre of any diabetes treatment plan. High blood sugar, or hyperglycaemia, is a major concern and can affect people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

People with diabetes get hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when their bodies don't have enough sugar to use as fuel. It can happen for several reasons, including diet, some medications and conditions, and exercise.
