Your changing bag
Your changing bag will be your constant companion for many a week yet, so choose carefully. It should be big enough to carry all your baby kit without being too bulky. Here's some advice on how to choose a bag and what to put in it.
You could get by with a normal rucksack (it leaves your hands free), but if you want to buy a proper changing bag here's what to look for:
- A broad shoulder strap and/or comfortable handle
- Wipe-clean lining
- Separate section for nappy stuff
- Changing mat (optional)
- Insulated pocket or bottle bag for keeping bottles warm or cool for several hours (optional)
- A zip-up pouch for dirty nappies, bibs or wet clothes
- Easy access pocket(s) for your phone/drink etc
What to put in your bag to get by:
- Fold-up changing mat (if one isn't included)
- A few extra nappies - you never know how many your baby will get through
- Baby wipes
- Nappy bags and nappy cream
- Tissues
- Spare clothes and a plastic bag to put dirty ones in
- Muslin cloths or bibs (disposable bibs are convenient)
If you're bottlefeeding you'll also need:
- Bottles
- Formula. Ready-made is great for travel, but more expensive. Or buy a milk powder container with compartments for pre-measured formula portions. (When you're ready to feed, pour the powder into the bottle of pre-boiled cooled water.)
- Insulated bottle bag (if one isn't included).
