Expect the Unexpected:
Don't let pneumococcal pneumonia strike

Pneumonia can affect anyone. Could you do more to protect yourself against pneumonia?

What is pneumonia?

Up to 1 in every 100 UK adults develops each year. Pneumonia refers to an infection of the lungs, however there are different types. Pneumonia can be caused by an infection from bacteria, viruses of fungi, which irritate the lungs. This irritation causes the tiny air sacs in your lungs to become inflamed and swell up with fluid.

The most common cause of pneumonia is a pneumococcal infection, due to bacteria called Streptococcus pneumonia.

Treatment of pneumonia

Pneumonia needs to be taken seriously, even if you are young, healthy or active.

Mild pneumonia can usually be treated at home with rest, antibiotics and by drinking plenty of fluids and most people will recover fully after treatment.

More severe pneumonia can lead to complications and may need hospital treatment. It's estimated pneumonia was responsible for an estimated 221,000 adult hospital admissions in England, approximately 1 in 5 were adults under 65 years of age.
