Heartburn and indigestion are common conditions, but they are not clearly understood. Although they are different conditions, many people can suffer from them interchangeably or even at the same time.

What is heartburn?

Heartburn, sometimes referred to as acid reflux, is a common condition that affects many people. It occurs when stomach contents (includes acids and other digestive fluids) escape back up into the oesophagus (food pipe). Because the oesophagus is not as well protected as the stomach, the stomach contents can irritate the lining causing painful symptoms that can last for a few minutes or a few hours.

Symptoms

• Tightening or painful/burning sensation in the back of the throat and chest area (usually behind the breastbone)
• Sour, bitter or acidic taste in the back of the throat
• Feeling of nausea or sickness

Up to one in five sufferers may experience heartburn every week. The pain endured by regular heartburn sufferers can be so problematic that it leads to disruption of their everyday life.

What is indigestion?

Most people will experience indigestion at some point in their lives. The term "indigestion" encompasses a range of digestive symptoms and is a common problem that affects many people, usually after eating or drinking. It is caused by acid breaking down the protective lining of the stomach wall, which leads to irritation and soreness.

Symptoms

• A painful sensation in the stomach or top of the stomach, often soon after eating or drinking
• Feeling 'bloated'
• Feeling uncomfortably full
• Gaseousness - needing to burp, belch or pass wind
• Nausea or vomiting
• Loss of appetite
