Allergy symptom diary

An important part of managing an allergy is knowing what triggers allergy symptoms.

Whether it is pollen in the summer or a type of food or food ingredient, keeping track of symptoms and triggers can help you prevent allergy attacks and help your doctor identify the best treatments for your allergy.

Keeping track of dates, times, triggers and activities can help show a pattern over time and highlight one-off problems.

An allergy symptom diary can be in any easy to follow format, and should include:

  • Date
  • Time of day
  • Symptoms
  • Duration of symptoms
  • Possible triggers
  • Action taken
  • Response to action taken

The food diary

Here's an example of a food diary used to track food allergy symptoms and triggers.

Print the following sample food diary and use it to record the foods you eat each day and when you eat them. Don't forget to include snacks and drinks. Record any symptoms you experience, as well as the time the symptoms begin. Show your food diary to your GP to help determine which foods may be triggering your symptoms.

A doctor may suggest using a food elimination diet to help prevent future triggers.
