Cold viruses survive for different amounts of time depending on:
- The type of virus
- The temperature
- The kind of surface they are on
Some can survive on indoor surfaces for up to 7 days, but most don't last longer than 24 hours. Some germs only live on hands for a few minutes, but up to 40% of common rhinoviruses are still alive on hands after an hour. Typically, viruses last longer on water-resistant surfaces like stainless steel, ceramics, or plastic. So, use disposable cloths to clean sinks, taps, light switches and doorknobs well with a disinfectant.
