Bacterial tonsillitis, also sometimes called strep throat, is a bacterial infection that can be treated with antibiotics. However, these infections can subside on their own, so antibiotics may not be the best option as they usually don’t speed up recovery and may have side effects.
Sinus infections, or sinusitis, are mostly caused by a virus and this type of infection should get better on its own without antibiotics. Rarely, a sinus infection may be caused by bacteria, so seek medical advice if symptoms don’t improve after 7 days or are getting worse.
Ear infections can be caused by a virus or bacteria and may get better without antibiotics. Your GP will take into account your age and how ill you are before deciding on the best treatment.
