What causes acne?

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

Acne happens when hair follicles get blocked by too much of a natural skin oil called sebum. Skin bacteria that doesn’t usually cause any problems can then grow in the blocked pores and cause acne papules, pustules or nodules. Acne is not a sign of poor hygiene. In fact, excessive washing and scrubbing can irritate your skin and make acne worse. There is no scientific evidence that foods such as chips, chocolate or pizza cause breakouts. If your acne is being managed properly, what you eat shouldn't affect your skin.

Cycle helmets, baseball caps and headbands that rub against your skin can also cause problems, as can some cosmetic products. Look for products tested to be less likely to block pores and cause acne, called non-comedogenic.

Dermatologists often use combination therapy, two or more different treatments, to manage acne. Sometimes this includes an oral antibiotic or contraceptive in women. The Pill helps slow oil production and may help women who get blemishes around the time of their period. Laser and light therapies are used on both acne and acne scars. They appear to work by destroying the bacteria that contribute to acne, as well as shrinking the oil glands where they live.

  • Your Answer:
  • Correct Answer:

As acne treatments have become more effective, virtually all acne can be prevented or treated effectively over time. Cases of severe acne may need a referral to a dermatologist, who can prescribe stronger treatments than those that are available over-the-counter or from your GP. Even acne scarring can be treated now with laser resurfacing, chemical peels or other treatments.
